Chest in clock room, saving Curly

Hello! :)

I'm new. And .. I kinda need help already? Would you please help me with the following situation in the game?

It's about saving Curlys life. I towed her away safely from the core. I dried her in the save room. Carried her past the main artery. And then I was alone, back in the village. So far so good. Then I got the booster 2.0, teleported to all the eggs, and told the scientist that I don't want to fly away with him from the island just yet.

Then I climbed the wall.
The chest inside the clock room ... I couldn't open it. People say I need to have saved Curly. But .. I did. Then I arrived at the Plantage. After searching for ages, not finding Curly who is suppsed to be there, somewhere, I checked a video walkthrough, and basically, stared in disbelief.

I was in the exact place where she should be - but she wasn't there. The bed was empty. Now what? I did rescue her. Where did I go wrong, what did I miss?

Playing the free version (enxengine) on Raspberry Pi with a usb SNES controller.

Yeah that sounds like a problem with nxengine, you did everything right
My only suggestion is play real game not weird copy

That's very strange...if my memory serves, making sure that you have Curly during the Ironhead fight is the last requisite for having her show up in the Plantation. The only thing I could think of to explain this is perhaps an error in the Nxengine, but I don't know much about that version, so do correct me if I'm wrong.

If you took Curly with you to the Ironhead fight, then there's no reason you shouldn't be able to open the chest in the clock room.

According to the script in the Clock Room, the treasure chest will only open if flag 1042 is set. And flag 1042 will only be set by that point if flag 836 is set by the time that you beat Ironhead. And flag 836 will only be set if you take Curly with you to that fight, which you did.

So yeah, like the others have said, it's probably an error with NXengine.

I don't know who or what "Ironhead" is. The big fish in the main artery? Yeah I got that one. And at the time I had Curly in the bubble with me.

Enxengine is a fantastic thing, but yeah, it may be a bug, and since I am in a conversation with the author of it already, I think I'll mention it, see of she has an answer, or if she can take a look at the savegame.

Thank you so much. It doesn't feel like a waste of time or energy to play this game at all. Sure it is frustrating that I may have to redo a lot of things, but... this game gets me very emotional. Goes under my skin what happens here. Some of it is difficult to take, even. There cannot be many games quite like this in the world.

Just for the future, its called "NXEngine"

But yeah, your better off playing the PC Version. The Tribute site has save files if you don't want to play it through up to were you were, and if you can't play the PC Version, the game is also available for PSP (homebrew), 3DS, DSI and Wii.

Thanks so much :). I've got this on my 3DS, and I also still have my HumbleBundle copy of Cave Story +.

Still, even though there seem to be flaws, I love the NXEngine and that it's open, it's likely the only way I can play this on a Raspberry Pi. So if there's a way there could be possible bug fix for something on the horizon I'll be glad to help the author of the engine.

So yeah, I'll probably give this a parallel go on the 3DS, the RPi _and_ the PC copy. I enjoy this game on all platforms :).

Just play the freeware version on PC. 100% bug free.

i highly doubt it even counts as a bug anyway because of it's very small probability of happening

It's relatively easy to perform, actually, but in the context (which is regular, innocent gameplay) that Jammet is playing in/concerned with, PC Cave Story is basically bug-free. There are other minor issues like Booster's pants changing color, but while actually playing it works as it should in nearly all situations.

dude what are you talking about
hell man people use that trick in speedruns to bring the jellyfish juice and charcoal over the first time so they don't have to backtrack
just because it's unlikely to happen doesn't mean that it can't be performed with ease

i meant in normal gameplay, dunc
obviously people who are speedrunning will do that trick to not waste time
but most of the time people aren't speedrunning cave story and as such aren't using that trick
