Can't really understand why this wasn't really a thread in the first place, we got pronouns so I was like Genuinely surprised it wasn't already that. This place is funnier to doomscroll on than Twitter or Bluesky imo. Less Noise. That Pokey Minch guy's real annoying.
I think just doing a text field instead of removing it or having the "0, 1, or cosmic bit flip" thing is simple enough?
Random ass rant for context for Those Who Know:
The sensationalism around the concept of the media has simmered off and I think people who feel comfortable outing themselves with whatever gender they relate to should feel free to do so, as Every Gender Has Its Own Baggage Behind It, it means people could use it as a context clue for conversations among interested parties.
I think a pretty simple "Don't use the gender field to promote pedophilia, violence, or sexual violence" rule to accompany it would be necessary to combat the way it'd been weaponized (and further sensationalized) against the queer community more broadly following its entry into the western mainstream. There's a lot of cultural rooting across the entire world that mirrors the current understanding of gender and how it affects the self, and was only held back with the advent of structures designed around exclusively around the accumulation of power decrying "Sodomy" and the "Unnatural" behaviors as if their very own desire to conquer the natural order isn't what got them there in the first place.
I don't think I need to explain the importance it can have to some indidgenous people on the internet to have their culture be represented in a healthy manner in the modern era and I've known many people in this community who have spent a lot of time pondering about their identity that are too afraid to go into certain public spaces or public online spaces because they don't want to be victimized by randos on the internet just for trying to exist.

The Cave Story community more broadly has served as a very accepting space towards queer people on the internet, allowing the culture that formed around the game to be extremely open to the concepts of discussing the subjects of "Gender", "Identity", and "Humanity" as the result of the game's subject manner.
Pixel himself has made it apparent on social media that he's supportive of trans people among his fandom, and imho his other media leaves not much room for the imagination, and with how modern internet infrastructure has allowed people to share information across countries and languages a lot easier it's allowed everyone's opinions to diffuse over time and not spill over into violent conflict and re-inflicting trauma on the basis of gender and identity. I think we'll see a species field one day but I'm not sure who's ready to start that conversation. Really =Chako's Lipstick= is the dead-ringer for both of these things but I wouldn't reccomend you delve into that subject if you aren't an adult.
