Cave Story + has started running choppy but it never used to

When I first got the game it ran perfectly and smoothly until a couple of weeks ago now it runs choppy, but only the gameplay. Its at the point of unplayablity... advice?

Check your settings. You might have to change your performance options in order to play it at full speed.

First and second items are 90% of Cave Story related issues. Check them both out and get back to us.

EDIT: Also if you are using a laptop check your power plan settings. If it is set to power saver then change it to another option.
