So I'm about to get back into Cave Story (after over 3 years), and I downloaded the game yesterday. I have the Deluxe version installed, some stand-alone zip files of the game, and saves made by other people. I plan to play casually first, then play around with death/time runs and user created saves.

How should I set up Cave Story so I can get the best experience out of it?

Cave Story isn't really something that needs a good set up. In fact, there's not much to set up at all. You just play it. You can use a controller or something if you want but keyboard controls are fine.

Playing Cave Story with a controller is the best.

I completely disagree. Maybe I'm used to keyboard controls, but default keyboard controls are best.

Also the only recommendation I can think of is don't play it in fullscreen, pixel stretching is ass.

I do wonder though. Despite that we have DoConfig to do it for us, could we go from fullscreen to windowed if we press alt+enter?

Well I have an old Logitech gamepad that has always felt natural for me with Cave Story on the default gamepad config, more so than the keyboard. To each their own I guess.

Pretty much the only thing you need to worry about with the config is windowed vs fullscreen and keyboard vs gamepad. There is no optimal setting, just go with what you are comfortable with.

If you have an HD TV,a HDMI cord, and a laptop, you can hook it up to the TV. This might be something with my TV, but it also puts a better size for full-screen than on a computer. You could also use a game-pad, which would make it feel even more console like.

Pretty big pixels, Bionic
I'd prefer laptop + windowed mode
And keyboard
Playing on pad seems weird

I actually like bigger pixels for certain games, just not ones that are distorted. My TV makes them big, but not distorted.

I'll have you know I play Cave Story on my Wii connected to a shitty monitor all the time! Being able to play it on a TV is quite a gift.
...Cave Story is not a visually impressive game. At all. There's no way the way it looks can amaze you at all.

Compared to what? Clusters of polygons that everyone thinks are so visually impressive but will look like dog turds to everyone in a few years, if even that.

No but like
Even by 2D standards there are games with graphics that look much better and can be actually visually impressive. Cave Story has very basic art, enough to get you playing, but it doesn't try to go particularly out of the box. Not that that's a bad thing, it's good for most of the effort to be put into making the actual gameplay.
