The game looks this instead of filling the whole screen:

diph.php

Is there any way to fix this?

You could try changing your display settings, or run the game in windowed mode.

It's because your monitor is widescreen. Don't worry though, my laptop is widescreen too (although if I run CS full screen it remains 4:3 with large simetrical black borders on the sides). Just run it in windowed mode.

I have widescreen and that doesn't happen. Cave Story just fills the whole screen.

Me too, I think you've got the game set to 640x480.

My old laptop wasn't widescreen, and it did do that (except the game was centered in the screen, not in the upper left corner).

did you log off and/or close your laptop (if applicable) while playing? that fucks shit up.

other than that, i would seriously suggest opening DoConfig and selecting "640x480 Windowed."

Again to you I say:
Check the preferences for the .EXE, see if you have it set to run in 640 res.

I don't know if this has been solved somewhere else yet, but changing the resolution system-wide fixed this problem for me. I went from 1366x768 to 1280x720 and it worked perfectly. It seemed a little stretched because it was widescreen, but it's definitely better than having the majority of the screen gray. Hope this helps someone.

I have to do that every time I launch plus, but I only had that problem once for cave story in general.

If you don't have a 1280x720 option or can't be bothered changing the resolution of your computer every time you play CS+ then find the CS+ exe on your computer, right-click, select properties and change the compatibility settings to run in 640x480 resolution. CS+ will then display beautifully.

In fact that would probably also fix the OP's issue with CS so as long as DoConfig was set to fullscreen and if this wasn't three years too late to the party. Oh well.
