So I've been getting my girlfriend into quite a bit of games I grew up on, like Zelda LA, ALTtP, Oracle of Seasons, I bought her a GBA & Pokemon Red, etc. I've been showing her a lot of cool Indie games & I figured I'd put some on her laptop. Last night I let her have a swing at playing Cave Story & as I expected the gameplay was a little too frantic & fast paced for her too handle >.<

I was wondering what would be some good platforming games too introduce her to the basic mechanics of the genre without being too excessive for somebody who hasn't played a lot of video games? (Clearly Super Mario Bros is on that list).

I just couldn't stand her life not being complete without having the abilities needed to expierence Cave Story in all it's glory :(

That's actually a good idea. I should have Kirby's dreamland for GB around here somewhere.

Knytt Stories and An Untitled Story (okay, Untitled Story starts off easy) are good platformers but don't involve shooting. I can't think of any jumpyshootymetroidvanias that are easier than Cave Story. You might have to face the fact that your girlfriend is a scrub.

Everybody's gotta start somewhere. I'll go with Kirby for now, then maybe Warioland or Metroid 2. I'll check out Knytt Stories as well.

Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure.

That's a fairly easy old 2D platformer that I managed to get through when I was very little, so I'm sure your girlfriend could manage them fine. You will likely need to use DOSbox to get it working, though.
