Whenever I run Cave Story in fullscreen mode on my 1080p monitor, it stretches to fit the screen, instead of letterboxing it, and it resizes all of my windows to 640x480.
Is there any way to fix this?

As far as I'm aware there is no easy fix for this, since Cave Story was made before widescreen monitors (16x9 ratio) became common place. I'm pretty sure Cave Story was programmed with the assumption that you would be playing it on the once "standard" monitor display ratio of 4x3.

It uses hardware stretching afaik so I think it's determined by how your GPU implements it

Essentially it temporarily forces your computer to render at 640x480 resolution while cave story is in fullscreen mode and is the active window. How this is rendered onscreen is entirely determined by your graphics card and your monitor's display settings.

Some monitors allow you to alter the width and height of the display, so maybe give that a try the next time you play CS.

Plug your computer into an HDTV. It works for me.
