It seems the flash gets drawn "underneath" the fade effect, actually, so yeah you can't use both without ASM or some other trickery

You probably should have tried flashing THEN waiting because fades have a built-in WAI of sorts that blocks a lot of other actions

I think this mod was really cool and I can tell you put a lot of effort into it, however there were some pretty big difficulty issues that kept me from being able to fully enjoy it. Maybe i'm just getting old and aren't as good as I used to be. More specifically:

I think it's more that MS paint doesn't know how to handle indexed palettes intelligently thus it's not recommended for editing

some types of NPC have special behaviour to run animations when they reach a certain amount of health. When this happens, instead of normal death behaviour, the animation plays and the NPC becomes unshootable. This is very common for labyrinth enemies in particular. So, it probably won't work...
