Take a look at the code for the drowning death animation, it has code that looks for what direction the player is facing. Make a check for if left, check if player is facing left, and the same thing for the right side. Then make it execute whatever. That's how I think it would work.

I meant the actual placement of the NPC, so I could make it turn into the Quote NPC for animations at the players spot, without making them have to be at an exact spot. The render code wouldn't move the NPC itself, only the graphic, right?

Well, my opinion on the gaurd function is to have it a choice between the single button press and the attack + down, and have a counter attack that can be used with some enemies, allowing for a usefulness to the gaurd.
