i don't know enough about nxengine to help, sorry, you'd have to ask someone more knowledgeable about it. i swear there was a version of original freeware that was compatible post-32 bit support being dropped, but that might've been for an older version... wine won't work either unfortunately...

all updates after mojave (10.14) drop 32-bit support for applications (ie. cave story), so they're not going to run anymore, i'm sorry. i believe there may be a port that will work, but i don't remember which one, you'll have to poke around the downloads page. i may sound like a hypocrite here...

this has probably also been said before but if there were to ever be an official continuation to cave story it would most likely be a prequel, it makes the most sense
