I tried the demo, I like it aside from the fact that blocking locked on to targets. So then I'd try to block an attack and I'd turn around and hold my shield up to something behind me. And unfortunately that's a dealbreaker for me.

I think the closest you could get would be recent 2D Castlevania style RPG elements, but even then it wouldn't have much place since Cave Story is so linear. Unless you mean completely recreated and redesigned as an RPG, in which case I think it'd be great if the story were made to be a bit...
