hey what do you think about final fantasy 5

FF5 is great, and I hate how it is overlooked for the subpar FF4. It was the first FF game that actually had any form of character depth and the job system was fun to use.

FF4 is so fuckin overrated man like even though the characters are "Unique" its still just like, pretty much entirely riffed on the original Star Wars trilogy, just with some japanese and european mythology and final-fantasy-isms kinda crowbarred into it. FF5 meanwhile just sorta shoehorned in some mythologies that might not have been as mainstream in FF's target demographic, which was kinda cool honestly, it showed that the team did really care about the world around them and didn't just want to produce like. An elaborate TV Show that's drama for drama's sake, and it kinda set the stage for the themes a lot of the later games would need to tackle just by being willing to spread things out so far (Like seriously, 3 whole worlds, ik one of them is the other two merged but thats still such a cool story beat, I just wish it got a unique tilemap like the other maps)

I played through all of FF4 and just couldn't bring myself to care about anything that was happening. Cid dies and I don't care. Cid comes back to life and I don't care. The entire cast felt so one-dimensional that I wouldn't notice if they were replaced with cardboard cutouts. The only game mechanic that was FF4's claim to fame, the ATB system, was used by every FF game up until FF9, so it stopped being anything special.

To be fair I don't think any other final fantasy game has one of its final dungeons take place inside of a giant mecha, or has a fight scene with tanks. I remember watching @Bionicobot do his playthrough of ff4 and he like nodded out after the dwarf shit and never bothered to play the game again after that

I know I'm late to this but FF4 feeling overrated really exploded for me when 14's team started referencing it as hard as they could for an entire expansion.
There's a couple aspects that would've been really cool if it wasn't 'just another FF4 reference'.
And that's coming from someone who went through 4's DS port with cheats while growing up so it couldn't just have been nostalgia favoritism.

The job system and 5's other intricaties make it such a wonderful game though, replayable too (I've been meaning to join 4 job fiesta someday, too busy for this year sadly).
If one game would inspire me if I ever were to make a RPG it'd certainly be that, customization is fun and if there's game breaking potential then that's just more fun.

Oh yeah speaking of Final Fantasy 4, how about the Roaring Knight's design

Final Fantasy 5 but with Multiple Endings

Technically the ending already changes (a tiny bit) dephending on who's alive when you defeat the final boss.

I don't think multiple endings would really be that interesting though.

Nah I think there was like a huge opportunity for like something that'd resemble the movie's plotline where the minutia in when you arrive at certain locations matter because of the evolving dynamics going on at each place. Especially during like the latter half of the 1st act where it gives the impression that shit's coming to a close and you're funneled into That Annoying Ass Dungeon (you know the one), since the game's plot sorta revolves around 'The Void' you'd think the themes of existance and circumstance would be brought out ESPECIALLY at that point in the plot. You could use it as a setup to tie into more routing choices in the 2nd act and do some insane bullshit to save Galuf that way Krile can get her shit together in a way that doesn't involve all of Galuf's old friends being permanently traumatized by what unfolds in Castle Exdeath.
