This might be a glitch with the profile messaging system. You should be able to use the Messenger (little envelope icon in the top toolbar beside notifications) to send a message as long as you want.

Erm, a bit of a problem with that. When I click on the personal messenger, it takes me to an error page, telling me that I am "not allowed to use the private messaging system." Do I need to have a certain number of posts, or what? I really don't want to have to wait to send my reply to him.

There is a requirement of some sort, but I have no idea what it is, or even if it's the same as it was before the switch. You should have more than enough posts..
Well, I guess a temporary solution could be to write it across multiple comments, 6 lines per comment.
