The point you made about the "rules" of music being more like trends is true across the board -- it's exactly the same as in linguistics (almost all linguistic "universals" are broken by some language or another) and all of the sciences (in that theories are built to explain things. If a theory gets violated, then the theory was wrong, not the data).
Then there is math where the theory is the practice.

About to read through the rest of the post. By "one of the meanings" I was referring to the two distinct meanings of slashes.

I'm tots okay w/ your method of doing the chords. I only did it my way to keep them all on the same line (for my ease of use, as I was going straight from the org into the message).
Am I correct in thinking one of the meanings is enharmonics, or am I crazy?


As far as inspiration goes, I'm woefully ignorant about most composers. From that list you gave, the only ones I have listened to a decent amount are:

Beethoven

John Williams

annnnd I'm going to throw Scott Joplin onto that list. I've also listened to the 1812 overture a bajillion times (the whole thing, not just the finale), but it's the only tchaikovsky piece I've listened to.
In very rough order of aspiration, then:

John Williams (not very sure about this the top four-ish are all very close)

Tchaikovski
Beethoven

What that list doesn't show is that I like each for different reasons, and that some of the composers are MUCH closer in rank than the others.
The only reason tay-tay got so low down is due to competition. :[ She's superdy awesome (although her lyrics are often the captivating portion of her work, rather than the music itself).

Also there are composers on that list I've heard tales of and that do things I'd like to emulate, but I've never actually listened to. Most prominently, Wagner and his use of leitmotifs.

Alsoalso why does E E only follow Bm Bm in Tot? I presume there is a reason.

Well, the next step after figuring out what the chords are is to figure out what their function is. IIRC, there are some more complex functional things that happen in the 2nd half but not in the first. Post what you have so far, and I'll see if there's enough interesting harmonic functionality, or if you should do more.

Is there something very necessary in the tot chords that I need to know, or is the main thing just that I can identify them?
Because I've been not giving time to figuring out the latter half or so of the chords, so I was wondering whether I could keep working on those a bit while we move on, or whether it is imperative that I do them all first.

Ahh yes. Main Vein is an amazing piece; There's an album on PiSTON SOURCE that features several remixes by different people all based off of that one song, and finding the origins of that is probably what got me into Jamiroquai
