I was thinking it'd be nice if we were to do something while Nintendo's doing their own NWC at E3.

Because it'll be kinda hard to coordinate a tournament over the forums, I'm going to make this a high score challenge. Here's some things you will need to use in order to participate.

1. The 1990 Nintendo World Championships NES rom, which you can download here

2. An NES emulator (if you don't have one, I recommend using FCEUX or NEStopia)

3. If you have the physical game and NES/Famiclone, you are awesome.

Now, if you want to submit your score, just post a screenshot (emulator screenshot or computer screenshot are acceptable), you do have the option to go for better scores if you want that put on the scoreboard. I guess the duration for this will be from as soon as this thread is posted to up until E3 ends, which is on Thursday, June 18th.

So give it all you got and have fun! :)

I'll laugh if someone new bumps this thread a couple months/years from now, thinking that this is still going on and posts their score here.

They really have Tetris scores a 25x multiplier?

Oh, awesome, I'm totally up for something like this : o

I actually have a repro of the game, and my high score is 963,670, so I'll try to match that up or reach a million for my actual entry. Quite clearly it's easiest to get a lot of points playing Tetris, so beating Mario and Rad Racer as fast as possible is essential to getting a good score. From what I remember, it's best to farm off of the coin block in 1-1 so you can beat the Mario segment without having to waste time transitioning to level 1-2. Besides that, it's mostly just Tetris skill (it'll likely be at least 90% of your score if it's any decent).

Since I guess we're doing this using the official tournament timing, set your time to 6:21 (or LLRL if you have a repro like me : p).

I think you sort of just answered your own question there.

Hey Tlinc, you should update my score with this. I wouldn't feel right using a score I got before you made the competition.

If someone manages to beat this I'll definitely try again though :orangebell:

A lot of it comes from knowing how to manipulate Mario to get the best time and the best Tetris pattern. The manual for the repro I have gives a lot of good advice, so if anybody wants me to share that I'd be happy to.

is it actually possible to get 50 coins in 1-1? is there a trick to the coin block?
also: NEStopia doesn't have a 6:21 timing setting, it's just 6:15 or 6:34 :/

I went with 6:15 since its closest

The trick is that you have to lose a life after you use the coin block. The checkpoint is, conveniently, right next to it.

Huh, weird. Is that the same across all emulators? It sucks to have a disadvantage, even if it's only a few seconds.

The best I can manage in the mario segment with that strategy is about 1:30, which is the same time it takes me going through to 1-2 but I get less points, so I guess it's a matter of preference. It's a lot easier strategy.

I guess i'll lob this as my "HIEH SCORU" for now

Mario has ice skates, cars swerve right in front of you and I've always enjoyed how Tetris does its best to screw with your block building
(done with 6:15 timing)
Also I haven't seen it mentioned yet but in Rad Racer it's possible to press Up as well as A for extra acceleration

[11:10:46 AM] Tommy (Tpcool): fuckin beat noxid's score
[11:10:53 AM] Tommy (Tpcool): i win bitches!!!
[11:10:58 AM] Safusaka: what!!!!!!!!!11
[11:11:12 AM] Tommy (Tpcool): i guess you could say...
i'm one in a million
[11:11:27 AM] Safusaka: uh.
[11:11:31 AM] Tommy (Tpcool): (or one million seventy seven thousand seven hundred)
[11:12:34 AM] Safusaka: it is just a tetris competition...
[11:13:56 AM] Safusaka: What the!!!
[11:14:00 AM] Tommy (Tpcool): kinda but not really
[11:14:21 AM] Safusaka: you can get no points in the first two and still win
[11:15:00 AM] Tommy (Tpcool): mario is all about finishing fast and manipulation
rad racer is just finishing fast but there's a lot more memorization if you want to do it fast
[11:15:31 AM] Safusaka: did they think people were not good at tetris
[11:17:03 AM] Tommy (Tpcool): you don't even have to be good at tetris
the aforementioned manipulation in mario makes it so that you only need to do memorization for tetris
[11:18:32 AM] Safusaka: you are!
[11:19:04 AM] Tommy (Tpcool): noxid is going to suck my ****
[11:19:09 AM] Tommy (Tpcool): because i win...

Time is running out :koron:
