My computer broke last night pretty soon after I made my last post here >< (seems like it was a H/D crash, but I smelled smoke...)
Fortunately, I have most of it backed up and got a spare small H/D; but it feels a bit more dangerous now...
All of my data is now just in one place
If I were to lose everything ohhhhhhhhhhh
Nearly 10 years of accumulation hangs in the balance!
Some characteristics of my PC :
One DVD drive works great, but scratches discs until they are unusable.
The other DVD drive is slow and can barely read anything that's not in perfect shape.
The soundcard broke half-way long ago, I had the external part of the card just sitting on top of the PC until one day it must have fried itself. Luckily the guts of it still work.
The 5.1 speakers I loved have become unusable because of the control panel generates feedback on a MASSIVE SCALE, like if I turned it on now, it would TRULY destroy everything, blowing out all speakers at once.
Now, I use some ancient speakers that are sitting on a tall flashlight for a stand.
The CPU heatsink is self-made... bent metal holding it in place.
I just cleaned out the PC today, and the biggest cloud of dust I've ever seen emerged.... took me about 5 minutes to get it clean using compressed air. [I was given a tip today by a professional that I should have used an outdoor blower instead ...]
The PC had aged at least 4 years with the original harddrive, and then another 4-5 with the twin RAID0 setup I was using. I never got rid of the information in all that time...
I had stuffl ike this :
On the Desktop there was ... Desktop X, and Desktop Again; and elsewhere there was Desktop which lead to Desktop Top, Desktop Left, Desktop L, Desktop R, Desktop Right which lead to Desktop left which lead to Desktop, desktop right which lead to Desktop 2, Desktop 1 which lead to Desktop
Not kidding... just an example of how MUCH STUFF accumulated
The computer would also decide to randomly forget information, or corrupt stuff. It had a knack of pausing during boot up; which sometimes made it take 15-20 minutes to start Windows...
The USBs in the back used to act strangely as well... if you used them; it would connect, disconnect, connect, disconnect... over and over till it got bored. It finally stopped doing that.
I've also gone through multiple video cards... Gah, the issues there... Spent big bucks to have the cards eventually die and show me strange, strange issues. (I bought a BFG... a warranty that was LIFETIME! ... Except, I didn't count on the company going out of business)
I love my monitor though, but the power button broke when I first got it... so I never turn it off.
Despite all this, until its dying breath, it will PUSH ON! <3 my PC
