Hey everyone,
Been having some problems with Cave Story. It runs fine up until five minutes into the game, and then my system will freeze up. I then have to manually force my computer off (by holding down the power button). I really have no clue how to determine why this is happening, but I can list some system specs:

Windows: Windows XP5.1 (Build 2600) Service Pack 2
Internet Explorer: 7.0.5730.11
Memory (RAM): 1407 MB
CPU: AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology ML-30
CPU Speed: 1579.5 MHz
Sound card: Realtek AC97 Audio
Display Adapters: ATI MOBILITY RADEON XPRESS 200 | ATI MOBILITY RADEON XPRESS 200 | NetMeeting driver | RDPDD Chained DD
Screen Resolution: 1280 X 800 - 32 bit
:
Network Adapters: Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC - Packet Scheduler Miniport
CD / DVD Drives: D: _NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A
:
COM Ports: COM3
LPT Ports:
Mouse: 5 Button Wheel Mouse Present
Hard Disks: C: 53.3GB
Hard Disks - Free: C: 24.4GB
USB Controllers: 3 host controllers.
Firewire (1394): 1 host controllers.
:
Manufacturer: Phoenix
Product Make: 2000
:
AC Power Status: OnLine
BIOS Info: ATAT COMPATIBLE 081605 PTLTD 6040000
Time Zone: Central Standard Time
Battery: Unknown
Motherboard: emaxs 2000
Modem: SoftV90 Data Fax Modem with SmartCP

I've been trying to work this out for about a day now, and tried searching online for solutions... I've updated drivers and such, but this game won't stop locking up my computer. Anyone got any ideas?

thy these:

-Use a different graphics card (this is usually the problem)
-Run as a windows 95 document. Sometimes this helps
-If you really want cave story, re-install windows.

Browse though the threads in this forum to see if you can find someone who has had a similar problem.

Cave Story is worth it enough to re-install windows in my opinion if it comes to that. :D

I tried looking through threads here already, and I also tried running it as a Windows 95 document. No dice :(

...

I'm going to install Linux and try it on there. :D

I had the system freeze/reboots way back and it was sound related... You could try lowering the Sound Acceleration in Control Panel... [either off or 1 past off I think did the trick for me]
Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio Tab -> Sound Playback Advanced -> Performance tab -> Hardware Acceleration... 0 or 1 (Emulation or Basic)!

If the sound glitches or makes kinda wierd sounds while in Cave Story it is most likely the problem, and if it doesn't than just maybe it might help...

Thought it would be worth trying anyways ~!

edit: Realtek AC97 Audio I think is trouble, I have that on the motherboard too

Thanks folks, I got it working (under Kubuntu). Works like a charm... I even noticed a little less lag than what I was used to under Windows.

Then why did he put it all in one post if he was trying to raise his postcount since all of that only amounts to one post.

Not really. If I was trying to do so, I'd be all. BUMP.

Solution

Thought I'd post this here, although it's a tad late.

You would have to do one of two things:

1) Get a different sound driver. It seems others (http://www.cavestory.org/forums/posts/17875/) and myself included have problems with a Realtek sound driver. If your system persists on crashing, this is probably the problem.

2) Install Linux. This sounds harder than it really is to the average newb, but Wubi (http://wubi-installer.org/) is practically hassle-free. From there on out you can just have Wine installed (http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wine). Linux will use a different sound driver than Windows, so you won't have to worry about your computer crashing. I even noticed it running faster under Wine than on Windows. Also, one could install a Linux version (and not have to worry about Wine), but that isn't very mod-friendly. :)

Just wanted to inform anyone of possible workarounds. Have a good day :)
