The "illegal" Flash port of Cave Story has been discussed here before.
I have been working on reverse engineering it, and have got it to run without the Mochi preloader.
I don't think I could post it here, as it's still in violation of the GPL (as it incorporates NXEngine).

So my question is this, can someone please make a legal version of Cave Story in Flash?

What exactly is the advantage to having Cave Story in flash?...

It seems like it'd cause more harm than good.

The only real point I can think of is it would make it possible for more people to play.
However, I think most of those people probably shouldn't be able to.

The entire reason the flash version exists is because it was easy to port the nxengine's source code to flash, despite this being a violation of its license. Without the nxengine code, the flash version can't exist, unless you recode the entire game yourself.

If NXEngine was ported to Flash, but the Cave Story assets made external, would that not be a violation?

I don't see how you came to this conclusion.. it's not possible for everyone to run executables.
Some people would however have Flash Player, in which case this would allow them to play Cave Story.

Your own CSEngine, it arguably has no use. So far, it's only for Windows, only for your mod, and why not just improve NXEngine?

Don't you need to install flash... Via executable?
Not to mention, macs can't use flash, if I'm correct.

Macs can definitely use Flash, though I'm not sure if they include it - it's Apple's iDevices that don't support it.

Some platforms include Flash Player (for example: Windows 8, Google Chrome), so you don't necessarily need to install it.

This might be a valid point if there weren't already Linux and Mac and PSP ports, and a whole list of other ports of the original Cave Story available on the tribute site. The flash version of Cave Story fills no niche.

Flash would be pretty much the only way to play Cave Story on Windows RT however.

here's how you play cave story on windows RT:
don't, the game isn't meant to be played on a bargain-bin tablet. How are you even going to press the buttons?

You can get keyboards that work with Windows RT...

Also, I love it that this thread has became about why Cave Story /shouldn't/ be ported to Flash. I really should just do it myself.

you asked if someone could
we said "no, and here's why you shouldn't do it yourself"
it hasn't "become" about that, it's been 100% on the original topic the whole time

GIR said that the original port exists because it was easy. I'm not really interested in possible uses.

If you are inclined to porting NXEngine/CS to flash, the thing you are looking for is called Adobe Alchemy/CrossBridge.

I am aware ^^ Although, it would be more correct to say "FlasCC/CrossBridge".

Ah, I see. I just assumed that if Iphones were unable to use flash, then Macs couldn't either.
