Does he even have ankles? He looks human (kinda?), but he doesn't ever walk, just fly around. And when he turns into a ball, he doesn't even have any legs. But in his spare time, maybe he plays with pet dog.

I always thought Ballos's Dog was named Nikimaru. I dunno why, but it seems logical to me for that to be a dog's name. It does look like a Nikimaru anyway. The map system may have been created by Arthur, since maybe he knew only an explorer could reach it.
